Gratituesday: Live Music

music2

Tommy and I LOVE attending concerts. We especially love indie and bluegrass music. We usually take an annual trip to the Nissan Pavilion around Tommy’s birthday to enjoy the Counting Crows (which falls into neither of the genres I just mentioned - but we love them). This year, though, we decided to change our plans and see the Big Surprise Tour in Charlottesville for his birthday.

Ahhhh I LOVED it!  The tour was a mix of a couple of different bands, including the Old Crow Medicine Show and my husband’s favorite female artist Gillian Welch. I was excited to go simply to enjoy live music even though I really wasn’t a big fan of the groups that were going to be there. WHO KNEW I would fall IN LOVE with Justin Townes Earle?!!! Ahhh watching him perform and listening to his music was like taking a time machine back to the 1950’s. (Which, if you know me, is totally my dream era… it is soooo romantic to me!) He even dresses the part! (See him in the bowtie? No instrument, bending over into the mic because he is SO TALL.) Love, love.

I seriously LOVE live music. It is incredible how it feels like the music literally permeates your skin and boils up inside of you… completely surrounding you. I could just stand there and soak it all in. Okay maybe I did. Ahhh. I get chills just thinking about it.

Music is such an amazing blessing. It can take you places, I keeps you company, it is FUN. It’s like a little piece of heaven on earth!

What is your favorite group to see perform live? I have a $15 itunes gift card ready for one random commenter today! All you have to do to enter is share with me what your favorite group to see perform live is!

Kris! Who said:

I have only seen a handful - but I’d have to say Tesla ;)

Now I’m not gonna lie… I had no idea who Tesla is/was. But I did a little wikipedia research and I have to say I’m surprised. I  know Kris personally and totally would have thought she’d choose an opera singer or something. :) Anyway! Congrats Kris!! I will hand-deliver your itunes gift card the next time I see you!

September 8, 2009 - 9:13 am Key - Tye Tribbett and GA (its a gospel group)

September 8, 2009 - 9:17 am Betsy - Call me crazy, but I'm a more intimate kind of concert goer. My favorite was listening to this guy http://www.jakeshimabukuro.com/ in a really small concert that felt like a VH1 unplugged event. : )

September 8, 2009 - 9:17 am jared mcqueen - Robert Randolph & the Family Band is prob one of my favs each year... sometimes he gets to join DMB on stage for a jam session or two! OAR and Matt Nathanson were also awesome this year - loveeee me some live music as well! love the blog liz, your photography and art style are top notch.

September 8, 2009 - 9:19 am Kris - I have only seen a handful - but I'd have to say Tesla ;)

September 8, 2009 - 9:22 am Emily Finkel - um, I don't mean to be trendy. but i've honestly never seen anything like Coldplay. (and Counting Crows are actually my fav band too)... the only band I think that might beat Coldplay, would be Sigur Ros.... but I haven't seen them- yet.

September 8, 2009 - 9:25 am Emily G. - I very much enjoyed reading this. Thank you. I needed a break from the mundane and this provided it. As for the "in concert" question: I haven't been to a lot of live concerts recently, but i really enjoyed the Chevelle one i went to a year+ ago. Being surrounded by a crowd of sweaty people and enjoying the vibrations together was pretty much incredible. This is gonna sound kinda clichéd: but i really enjoyed the last DC Talk concert i went to years and years back (it was right before they broke up---for good---i think?). I was impressed by Toby Mac's ability to both work up the crowd and quiet them... and to speak truth and love to them. DCT isn't together anymore, but they are most definitely part of my "coming of age" years and they are missed. -Emily

September 8, 2009 - 9:38 am Julie - Mine isn't incredibly artsy or unique; however, one of my favorite concerts I've ever been to was Little Big Town. Oh, and I thought of one more: Leahy, they are more international, but they are absoluetly phenomenal!

September 8, 2009 - 10:25 am Ryan - Interpol will always be the greatest show I have ever seen. You need to go see them if you get the chance.

September 8, 2009 - 1:00 pm amanda - my fave live show is lucinda williams.

September 11, 2009 - 10:26 am Sabrena - My favorite group to see perform live is the Seattle Mariners! haha. Really, I did love Chris Rice live as well.

September 11, 2009 - 10:33 am Jesse - Honestly, one of the best concerts I have ever seen was The Charlie Daniels Band. They were not even the main group playing..but they totally stole the show. It was so intense to see what they could do on this fiddles and other instruments...they had the crowd going! So although they are not a favorite group of mine...they will always stand out to me as an amazing performance to catch when able!

September 11, 2009 - 11:45 am Charity - I would love to see Fall Out Boy perform live. I love their music! Thanks
