Hello friends! I'm Liz and I am a wedding and lifestyle portrait photographer living in central Virginia. My photography is a mix of formal portraiture and lifestyle photojournalism. My passion is capturing moments that my clients will cherish forever. The ability to capture those moments comes much more naturally to me when I know my clients on a more personal level. That said, it is a high priority of mine to make a strong effort to get to know each and every one of my clients personally.
This is my blog, this is my heart. It is my desire for you to get to know me on a deeper level through my writing and photos. I know if I expect my clients to share such intimate moments with me, I need to be transparent with them. Here I post everything from my favorite client photos to my everyday life with my husband, Tommy, and our two boston terriers. I'm also known to share a lot about my sister's children, as they are some of my favorite little people on earth.
I hope you'll stick around to see what 2010 holds for Love & Laughter Photography. We've got some big plans in the works for the next few months and I can't wait to share them with you!
So, I am going out of order for my giveaways. But I can’t help it, I really wanted to do this one this week. I think it was the combination of being snowed in and the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday. In either case, I wanted to offer a little luxury to my blog readers TODAY. So!! I am sooo excited to announce this week’s prize!
This week’s giveaway is a lovely Spa Kit. It includes:
A lotion, body wash, bath salt and scrubby set.
A spa music CD. (Mmm I wish I could keep this one for myself.)
A pair of soft, plush slippers.
A Luxe candle.
And the kicker! A $50 gift card to the spa of your choice.
Mmmmmm I ADORE trips to the spa and I am super excited to give one of my lucky readers a trip as well!
To enter this week’s giveaway simply leave a comment telling me what your definition of relaxation is. Coffee and a book? A day at the spa? Movie and popcorn with your BFF? Fill me in!
You can also gain other entries simply by sharing about this contest on Facebook, Twitter or your blog. For every time you post about the contest, come back and leave an additional comment letting me know! Each comment counts as one entry. You have until midnight of Tuesday, February 16th to enter as many times as you would like.
Good luck!! I will be announcing the winner of this contest on Wednesday, February 17th.
February 8, 2010 - 8:57 amJulie - If I'm with my kids and husband, I just love to go on any outing (park, orchard, etc.). However, if it's just me with no children, I love a good mani/pedi and time at a coffee shop to sip some coffee and edit photos or read or knit/crochet. Sometimes it's nice just to have some alone time! :)
February 8, 2010 - 9:31 amemily finkel - i feel most relaxed when my kitchen is clean and i am enjoying a good/deep/thought-provoking conversation with a friend... my kitchen has to be clean though, or else, it will be in the back of my mind somewhere which will prevent me from fully relaxing.
February 8, 2010 - 9:32 amChristina - To me, relaxation means being completely free from schedules, jobs, or time. When I am at the beach, I am most relaxed. Sun, sand, waves; all my senses are being overwhelmed with happiness there.
February 8, 2010 - 9:34 amChristina - Tweet-tweeted :)
February 8, 2010 - 9:34 amChristina - Posted to FB :D
February 8, 2010 - 9:36 amAimee - My relaxation is being with my husband in a cabin in the woods - my favorite vacation! Only thing that would've made it better would have for there to have been a hammock and warmer weather for swimming.
February 8, 2010 - 9:38 amAimee - Copying Christina -- Facebooked!
February 8, 2010 - 9:40 amAimee - ....and..... blogged! (I promise, I'm done!)
February 8, 2010 - 9:41 amEmilyG. - Had to think about this a bit... there are lots of things that relax me... but I think the top three are these: 1) A bath followed by snuggling in bed. 2)The Beach (i <3 laying on the beach and soaking up the sun). 3) A good massage (never have had a professional one, but Jimmy does a good job). I'll be back once this is tweeted/in FB. ;) -EmilyG.
February 8, 2010 - 9:48 amEmilyG. - Twittered! :)
February 8, 2010 - 9:52 amEmilyG. - Annnnd Facebooked! :)
February 8, 2010 - 10:01 amAnna - My idea of relaxation is sleeping in on a weekend morning and then eating breakfast in bed with my husband (even if it's just cereal) while watching cheesey Saturday morning shows (as in Saved By The Bell)! And if we can stay in pj's for as long as possible, that just adds to the relaxation.
February 8, 2010 - 11:22 amAshley - Relaxation: A good book, bag of candy and no plans for the entire day!
February 8, 2010 - 11:49 amDeanna Holderith - There are a few things that relax me, but a couple are a bubble bath with candles lit and relaxing music softly playing in the background or heading to a cabin in the mountains...there is one not far from where I live that has it's own hot springs pool right outside the door...nothing better than soaking in that hot spring pool with the sound of the creek and a vast open sky full of stars above!
February 8, 2010 - 12:05 pmMary Leahy - Relaxation is a hot bath and a hot cup of tea, a movie w/friends, cuddling with my man on the couch, game night! and a shower after a great workout. Even talking on the phone for an hour w/a close friend and praying together is very relaxing to me.
February 8, 2010 - 12:10 pmMary Leahy - Retweeted
February 8, 2010 - 12:13 pmMary Leahy - Facebook'ed as well! You rock Liz!
February 8, 2010 - 1:19 pmamanda - relaxation means a day in my house with no husband, no kids, no chores. it's drinking coffee in bed while perusing the stack of magazines that just keep piling up, a long hot shower where no one knocks on the door to ask me a question, listening to mama music (read: no Hannah Montana or Taylor Swift) while surfing the web, reading on the sofa in the late afternoon light...it means quiet!
February 8, 2010 - 1:22 pmamanda - i tweeted! http://twitter.com/AmandaMaysHuye/status/8819039330
February 8, 2010 - 1:34 pmChelsey - Ohman, my definition of relaxation? I think a day at the hot springs would be nice right about now ... or a morning of sleeping in following by a massage ... I'm not sure what alternate universe that happens in, but I'd love to live there! :)
February 8, 2010 - 1:45 pmHollie - Relaxation is being curled up on my big sofa with a good book and my best four legged friend!
February 8, 2010 - 1:49 pmHollie - Facebooked!
February 8, 2010 - 2:17 pmTammy - If and when my husband returns Jan 2011 from his 2nd deployment to Iraq and walks in the door. The relaxing feeling I will get from having a 3 year old, 2 year old and 5 month old by myself with my husband finally home will be priceless!
February 8, 2010 - 2:29 pmBrett Searles - My idea of relaxation would be a nice big mug of chai in one hand and a book in the other! You can't beat that!
February 8, 2010 - 2:33 pmBrett Searles - posted on fb!
February 8, 2010 - 2:34 pmBrett Searles - retweeted!
February 8, 2010 - 4:28 pmShahanna - Relaxation...right now would be a hot cup of coffee and my cozy couch...but the best relaxation would be the warm sun at the beach (Nags Head) and the waves crashing:)
February 8, 2010 - 4:34 pmShahanna - Posted on blog.
February 8, 2010 - 6:17 pmBecky W - Sittin outside on a comfy porch swing enjoying the sunrise (or sunset) with a good cup of tea!
February 8, 2010 - 7:34 pmB. Saboe - Relaxation= Beach + My Baby + Bud Light
The last big snow I remember disrupting our lives so much was the “Blizzard of ‘96.” And that was a long, long time ago. I always say I absolutely love living in Virginia because we get it all: snowy winters, green springs, too-hot summers, beautiful fall colors, the beach, the mountains, the valleys, the country and the city. It’s all here in our wonderful commonwealth. Except… lately we’ve been missing out on some snow. Lately, as in, a lot of years have passed since there was enough snow for me to build a snowman with and enjoy it for more than one day.
Well I am not sure if you got the memo - but we aren’t missing snow anymore!! :) I don’t know if I attribute my love for the snow to snowy traditions and excitement that I grew up with - or the cozyness of a snow day in the middle of adult life. Probably both. Gosh… it makes me giddy. So, this is what, the third snow of the year? The first snow I got caught in and was no where near a camera to capture it. The second snow, I was in FL far, far away from it. But this one? Oh I got it this time.
I’ve spent most of my time yesterday and today cozied up in my home, hot drink in hand, with snow falling outside of my window onto the white landscape. Romantic, isn’t it? Today I finally went out and played with my camera. I pulled out my new film and dusted off my film camera and only had the guts to take about 5 frames. Hah. Ah there’s something about film that seems so permanent… and scary! And delayed - now I have to wait until I finish the roll (at this rate it could be a year before that happens) and have it developed to see those shots! Of course, I also had my DSLR with me that kept me plenty entertained while I was out there. Here are some of my favorite captures from today.
It’s days like today that I wish I lived on a farm with a long, dirt road surrounded by trees. What did you do during your snow day today?
February 6, 2010 - 8:28 pmJulie - Beautiful shots! And beautifully arranged in that collage! I love the red berry shot! We didn't get more than an inch or two here, and it was too warm to look pretty. I'm so jealous of you!!! Enjoy!!
February 7, 2010 - 11:23 amDeborah Carr - Hi Liz - I love winter and snow too...today there is just a light snow drifting down. On such a perfect Sunday afternoon, I waffle between wanting to be outdoors in the snow, or settling in with a good book and a big mug of chai tea.
(fellow unraveller)
Oh it’s a fabulous (fri)day to announce the winner of the giveaway!
Congratulations, Emily G.!
Emily is such an advocate of my blog - she comments on every post and does everything she can to gain extra entries in giveaways (lots of tweets and FB posts :)). I am so glad she finally won something!
Stay tuned… I’m announcing another giveaway on Monday and I am pretty excited about this one!
February 5, 2010 - 4:48 pmEmily G - Yay!!!! I'm so excited! :) Looking forward to Monday (and every post... I <3 your blog!) <-- so totally NOT sucking up! ;) --EmG.
Welcome to another weekly addition to my blog. Thursday Thirteen is simply a hodge-podge list of things. Things I love, things I don’t. Things that excite me, things I think may be exciting for you, too. Since Tommy has been gone I have not been able to get my daily quota of conversation and I think my poor friends are getting the brunt of it while on our coffee dates. I have been a rambling MACHINE lately… it’s kind of embarrassing! Luckily they totally understand. (Ahhh that’s what friends are for!) So it is my hope that Thursday Thirteen will help lessen the load for my sweet, patient girlfriends. Hah.
So, without further ado… things I love:
NOT being snowed in. Can I get an amen?!
My JUICER. I am so in love with this thing. (Although it’s not the easiest appliance to clean, which may or may not prevent me from using it 10x a day.) Stay tuned for some of my favorite juicing recipes. I have come a long way since trying a juice fast 3 years ago and having to hold my nose while I put down each drink.
Being able to make my own office hours. In the past seven days I have turned three different guest bedrooms into my personal office space. Having the flexibilty to do so is SUCH a blessing.
Booking my flight to visit Tommy in March!!
Getting my hopes up about Tommy being home earlier than expected. (You didn’t hear that from me.)
The Right Brain Business Plan. This thing is so fun… and I think most (creative) small business owners could use a little fun during their number-crunching hours.
Reorganizing and redecorating my office. Now that my business branding has been decided on and will be announced soon, I’m redecorating my office to match. It’s a good thing I LOVE the style, eh?
Soft lighting. I finally got some nice lamps here in my office and it has made the biggest difference in this room.
Tivo! After being gone for over a week I came home to lots of new shows ready to be watched at my convenience. So fun!
Neighbors that plow your driveway for you. Our neighbor across the street plows my driveway every time it snows and he mows our lawn in the summer. True story. I can’t decide if he loves us that much or if he can’t stand to look at our unkempt lawn. Not sure (okay, I’m sure it’s the latter). Either way, he’s the best neighbor ever!
One on one time with some of my favorite little people in the world. My sister has four kids and all at once, they can be a handful. It is easy to forget all the little things I love about each and every one of them. But when we get 1 on 1 time, it all comes rushing back. So refreshing!
Pretty folders. Silly, but true. I love my pretty file folders with all my client information in them. Makes it not seem so… administrative and boring-like.
Twitter! Ahh I am obsessed with Twitter lately. Are you following me? Do it! And then I will follow you!
Okay that was fun! If anything, it just made me think super positively about my life and now I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. You should try making a list of things you love as well. Or better yet, leave a comment and tell me what you love!
And because no post is complete without a photo, here’s one last thing I love: a happy pup enjoying her kong.
February 4, 2010 - 10:53 amSara - That's a fun list :) I love lists too. I LOVE my Breville. Although you have a slightly different model. Believe me, Breville's are a breeze to clean compared to some other models. Can't wait to hear your faves! Did you read Natalia Rose with Jackie?
Cannot WAIT to see your new branding. Woo! xxoo
As any small business owner can attest, starting your own business swallows all of your possible spare time. For the past two years or so my schedule has been filled more and more with photography-related things (events, meetings, time spent editing) and less and less other things (fun-filled Friday nights, gym time, coffee dates). The biggest area of my life that has been effected has been my social life. I tried my best to keep my priorities straight and unfortunately that resulted in my social life slowly, but surely, dwindling down to the occasional monthly outing and/or family-focused dinner dates.
Luckily, a couple of big things have happened the past few months that have resulted in more hours in my days. The first big thing was me leaving my steady 40hr/week job to pursue photography full time. Suddenly I had 40 extra hours a week to work into my lifestyle. That’s HUGE! The second big thing was Tommy leaving at the beginning of this month. Well, there goes 2-4hrs/night that were once dedicated to him (and shall return to him when he is back this time next year). Suddenly I’ve got 56 extra hours a week to distribute as I wish. (Wow, that’s the first time I’ve added those hours up - and that’s a-crazy-lot!)
Well, I’ve started scheduling gym time into my days, and lots of travel plans are in the works. But the most exciting thing is the time I have been able to give back to my patient and understanding girlfriends. I have been having the best time catching up with my friends over coffee/tea/smoothies and it has been refreshing and borderline therapuetic for me these past few weeks (I hope for them as well). I am blessed to report that they do still want to spend time with me even after weeks (or even sometimes months) have passed that we have not been able to get together.
This week, I am super grateful for these coffee dates and the wonderful people that I can share them with. Absolutely nothing can replace solid, soulful conversation with a very dear friend. I always leave this special time with a skip in my step and a happy, full heart. I have truly missed the experience and I hope I am able to make it more of a priority in my life in the future.
Who would you invite on a coffee date? Tell me over here and be entered to win in this week’s giveaway! I hope this week’s contest winner will be able to use the Coffee gift set to help nurture relationships in his/her life as well.
February 2, 2010 - 8:55 amEmilyG. - :))) I'm glad things are going so well. Speaking of "getting together" we should hang out/watch Grey's/drink tea sometime soon! Of course that would require me to get caught up on Grey's first... so, i'll get right on that. ;) -Emg
February 2, 2010 - 9:58 amNikki VanDeWeert - Id invite all my girlfriends from high school. Now that I live in SC, I feel like I miss out on so much with all of them (including you too Liz!) It's hard staying in touch with all of them on a continuous basis. At least Sara's wedding will be a good time to see everyone again :)
I am so excited to be launching this campaign to gear up for the announcement of the new and improved Love & Laughter Photography! An authentic Starbucks mug

February 1, 2010 - 10:19 pmEmilyG. - Hmm.... Who would i like to take to coffee? My good friend Nancy (and also a photographer). Unfortunately she lives on the other side of the country. This means that she and i rarely sit down face to face to talk (but we do keep in touch via phone and other mediums regularly). I would love to sit with her in a coffee shop and talk the day away... If only i had the $$ for a plan ticket RIGHT NOW. :) -EmilyG.

February 2, 2010 - 9:10 amMeridith - I would definitely bring my momma! She lives in Atlanta and whenever we get the chance, we catch up over coffee. But for the record? I'm looking forward to having coffee with YOU sometime soon!
February 2, 2010 - 9:23 amMary Leahy - I'd take someone I don't normally hang out with, try to get to know them better, encourage them. I have a few ppl in mind.

(naturally, i wanted to say you, liz. but i didnt want it to look like i was sucking up.)
February 2, 2010 - 9:50 amemily finkel - Tweeted- check
February 2, 2010 - 9:57 amelizabeth leeds - I would take my friend Haley. She was a teacher with me in Thailand, and our coffee dates to the local Starbucks (yes they have starbucks there, for which i was so thankful!) and her encouraging words were what kept me there on the days I wanted to quit and go home!
February 2, 2010 - 10:08 amJacqulyn Miller - So, you don't need to enter me in the contest, beacuse we have coffee dates all the time at my house, at yours, on the run, at conferences, and well, you treat me alot. But I wanted to agree with emily that I might also want to take cjane on a date, or maybe her slightly less known sister, nie. But my favorite person in the world to coffee date with is Natalie, I could cry just missing her. Coffee dates are way too short for us though, we need a marathon(of coffee drinking, not running, lest you are confused.)

February 2, 2010 - 11:20 amAshley Wick - Hi Liz! I would soo take the opportunity to bring my grandmother to coffee. She lives in Connecticut and I dont see her nearly as much as I should, and when I do get the opportunity to see her it is always at a crowded family function or holiday- it would be wonderful to spend some time alone with her.
February 3, 2010 - 9:31 pmangela scalf - I would take my sister-although that would mean I would have to drive up to VA Beach. I could do that.
February 3, 2010 - 9:33 pmRachel Clarke - I would take my grandma on a coffee date. I miss her incredibly, and she is one of my most treasured friends.
February 3, 2010 - 11:08 pmStephen Maxwell - I just got a new burr grinder and would love to pour some Starbucks beans in it.
February 4, 2010 - 8:23 amMaura - My husband! You would think we would have down time quite often, but not since our baby has arrived. Even to have a coffee date by myself would be wonderful! :)

You guys!!! Are INCREDIBLE!! I am so, so excited about the money you raised for Haiti! Together you brought in over $750 for the people of Haiti!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is SO not the last time I will do something like this.
Okay, so time to announce the winner! What I did was give one entry for every $10 increment donated by you. That means, if you donated $50 then you were entered in this drawing five times. I put each name into a spreadsheet and numbered them from 1 to 77. Then I went to random.org and requested a random number:
#44 is Mollie Manis!! Yayy Mollie!
Thank you ALL, again, SO MUCH for Helping Haiti! It just made me feel so warm and fuzzy inside as your entries came in during this past week. Again, this is not the last time I will do something like this.
Okay. Stay tuned later today for another Giveaway announcement! There’s so much to come in these coming weeks.
I just wrapped up a quick trip to Panama City, FL to visit with my extended family and take some family portraits for them. I think within the past three days I had a total of five family portrait sessions. I am worn OUT! But, the time with my family was awesome. I am super close with my extended family even though we have lived 14 (driving) hours away from each other for my entire life. But, it had been soooo long since I had visited (I haven’t been here since before I got married!) so this trip was SO worth all the work involved.
So, here I am sitting in the airport - one of my favorite places (seriously) - getting a lot of things crossed off of my to-do list. I’m attempting to wind down and enjoy the forced “there’s nothing else to do right now but work” time I get while traveling.
I wanted to tell you all HOW excited I am to be launching a campaign (tomorrow!) for the entire month of February leading up to the announcment of a whole new style and brand here at Love & Laughter Photography. You are going to want to stay tuned for the kick off of my regular blogging schedule, including contests throughout the entire month of February, a couple of new weekly blog topics and the re-launch of regular Gratituesday posts! Woohoo!
I can’t wait to spoil my readers silly and to share with you all everything we’ve been working on behind the scenes here at Love & Laughter Photography for the past few months.
So! Come back tomorrow for the campaign kick-off including the announcement of the first contest!
As I mentioned in my last post, Haiti has been heavy on my heart. One of the things I have realized in recent months is how important it is to use our talents to help people. I believe each one of us was gifted with something that we can use to bless others, and that we should do so. I could volunteer for a telethon or help gather clothes for the survivors of Haiti (and I will), however, I am over the top excited to announce this contest as a way to help raise money for Haiti and specifically use my talent at the same time.

All I can say is… ya’ll are amazing. Phone calls, text messages, facebook comments and messages, emails! I have the best friends, family and clients in the WORLD. Thank you all so, SO very much for reaching out to us during this time of deployment/transition. Wow… I can’t believe it’s been over TWO weeks now since he left! But I hope the rest of the year flies by the way these past weeks have!
Guys, we FELT your prayers. I will say, the first day was the hardest. But after the first day, I have had my mind totally focused on a million other things (wait, is that total focus?) and have been able to shrug off the fact that my house is empty. And cold. And lonely. Okay… so I’m dramatic. Honestly, it hasn’t been too, too bad yet - mostly because he’s still in the US with his cell.
I did want to share with you all some photos from our week of Tommy’s departure. It was full of packing, errands, and trying to soak in as much possible time together. I also spent most of the departure ceremony taking photos instead of living in the moment, simply because I didn’t want to live in that moment. It was miserable! But you know what? It’s the sacrifice they all talk about. And of course we both agree that it’s worth it.
Check it out:
Alright, if that didn’t make you cry, then please keep reading.
So, I actually left town the same day Tommy did. I drove up to pick up my sister and then we road-tripped it to Nashville for the big Imaging USA photography trade show and convention. We made it there Saturday night and were 100% “photography minded” the whole time. Like, our brains were fried when I pulled into my garage a few days later! It was awesome. There are some big things in the works behind the scenes here at Love & Laughter Photography. You are going to want to come back in just a few days for an exciting campaign kick-off! (Consider that your “sneak peek.”)
However, (yes, there’s more!) while we were in Nashville, the earthquake in Haiti happened. Guys… I cannot tell you how my heart has been broken for the people of Haiti. I have stayed up late reading the news articles and looking at the pictures. I wish I could go into Haiti today and just hold some of those women and babies… give them blankets and love. However, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed or not, but getting in and out of Haiti has not been the easiest thing for people right now. While brainstorming what I could possibly do to help (other than give $$) I came across a fellow photographer with an amazing idea. With the idea she is willing to share and another Virginia photog, we have got something in the works for you and Haiti, both.

January 24, 2010 - 4:51 pmEmily G - Cry... yes, i did... Parting is difficult. I'm finding that the length of time doesn't always matter when saying goodbye to loved ones. But I'm also happy for you: That you've had such support and such love & that you've had your work to throw yourself into! I hope (and pray) that this will be something that helps you through the hard times. With Love, EmilyG.

Hope we can see ya sometime you're around Richmond!
February 6, 2010 - 8:03 pmDan Noel - Liz,
Thanks for sharing the departure ceremony with everyone on your website. I hope and pray that this deployment goes by quickly for you & Tommy. Please let him know I am thinking of him and hope he comes home safely. If there is anything you need of me, please don't hesitate to ask.
Take care,
Dan
